In April 2014, Music in the Round, in partnership with Sheffield Music Hub and ESCAL (Every Sheffield Child Articulate and Literate), was awarded a grant from Youth Music to deliver a year-long music programme with early years settings in Sheffield.
The project aimed to improve the personal, social and emotional development of children age 3 – 5 through participation in creative musical activity. Music workshops included a mixture of adult-led and child-led activities; singing, rhythm and rhyme, playing percussion, musical stories, creative music freeplay and hearing and interacting with professional musicians all specifically designed to develop communication, language and literacy.
The project was delivered by highly experienced workshop leaders Polly Ives and Vanessa Johnson as well as inspirational professional musicians from Ensemble 360 and experienced educationalists Paul Rissmann, John Webb, Sue Nicholls and Tracy Rodgers. It also supported the training of a Trainee Workshop Leader, Martha Hayward.
Early-years teachers, parents and carers were given access to resources and training to develop their skills in teaching children to improve their personal, social and emotional development as well as their communication, language and literacy skills through music.
Throughout the year-long project we built an online archive packed with helpful resources to help bring music into family, school or nursery life. We encourage you to explore the resources and use them in your setting, school or with your family.
