Music in the Round

World of Strings

‘World of Strings’ is a 3-year focus on the astonishing story of string instruments. It is about tradition, invention, creativity, imagination, education and participation. Above all, it is about the universality of music.

We will be presenting concerts and projects that fall into two categories: work that we already offer as part of our regular seasonal series and festivals in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and around England, such as the great portfolio of music written by so many wonderful classical composers throughout the ages, together with new events that are inspired by the opportunities that the exploration of string music and instruments themselves suggest.

Western Classical Music – the core of the project

Instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, guitar, harp (bowed strings and plucked strings). And maybe more unusual instruments, such as mandolin, lutes, viola da gambas and more.

Combinations: solos, duos, trios, quartets and more

Repertoire: from the Renaissance to Contemporary music (possibly with newly-commissioned music)

Masterclasses: presented by Ensemble 360 and others

Workshops: Look out for sessions and talks on such subjects as instrument making, performance styles and much more.

Non-Classical Genres

We will be taking a look at these fields on a regular basis, especially when connections to classical music are demonstrable.

Jazz: A look at great jazz performers, but jazz-inspired classical compositions

Folk: in its own right, but with demonstrable links to Brahms, Bartok and others

Technology: Electric instruments, digital instruments

World: String instruments are used in every musical tradition throughout the world.

We are really looking forward to a journey where we will be presenting great string music and tradition: one where we will re-visit classic repertoire and reach out to discover music that is less familiar to some of us but which is nevertheless wonderfully engaging and entertaining.
