Early Years Music Training Day
Bringing Nursery Rhymes to Life
Wednesday 28 March 2018, 9am-3:15pm
Leaders: Polly Ives, Martin Harwood and Esther Sheridan
Led by Early Years Music experts Polly Ives, Martin Harwood and Esther Sheridan, this event is for anyone interested in making music with 0-5 year olds – nursery practitioners, teachers, childminders, parents and freelancers with lots of or little musical experience.
Polly Ives, Martin Harwood and Esther Sheridan each have a wealth of experience in music and education, and are in high demand across the country. Between them, they have worked with Wigmore Hall, CBeebies, and London Philharmonic Orchestra, and have led projects for 0-5 year olds and their families in a variety of early years settings. Polly Ives is Music in the Round's Resident Animateur and also leads local concert series Concerteenies for babies and toddlers. Martin Harwood runs the very popular 'Small Voices Big Noises', weekly drop in music sessions for 0-4s and adults, and Esther Sheridan is project leader for Wigmore Hall's Early Years programme.
The day will include practical workshops, resource building, and networking, all equipping practitioners to use music in their setting every day to support learning. Participants will receive ideas and resources to take straight back to settings and get using.
All participants will attend a practical introductory group session, followed by three workshops:
Workshop 1: Using nursery rhymes as the starting point for playing with language and as a tool to help develop phonics and speech & language. Led by Martin Harwood.
Workshop 2: An introduction to early stage creative composition inspired by nursery rhymes. How to use tuned and untuned percussion instruments to support musical creations. Led by Esther Sheridan.
Workshop 3: Linking nursery rhymes with art and sensory engagement. Make your own props and materials and then learn how to use these alongside nursery rhymes. Led by Polly Ives.
