HAYDN Trio in G Hob XV: 25 Gypsy
BRAHMS Horn Trio in E flat Op.40
SCHUBERT Trio in B flat D898
An evening of engaging melodies and luxurious harmonies.
Haydn’s enchanting piano trios stand out in comparison with trios by his contemporaries, not only for their freshness and zest, but because of an unusual emphasis on the piano that requires sensitive accommodation from the string players. The folk influences of the final movement’s ‘Gypsy’ Rondo are mirrored in Brahms’ Horn Trio, a work in which the composer stated a preference for an old-fashioned ‘Waldhorn’ (hunting horn) to be used precisely to make a connection with traditional music.
Schubert’s Trio in B flat is one of his most effervescent works, prompting Schumann to state that with “one glance the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again.” High praise indeed!
