SCHUBERT Quartettsatz in C minor D.703
BRAHMS Piano Quintet in F minor Op.34
BRAHMS Serenade in D Op.11 for chamber ensemble
Ten players from Ensemble 360 take to the stage to present Brahms’ Serenade, an early masterpiece, regarded by many observers as an embryonic symphony.
They also perform Schubert’s ‘Quartettsatz’. This single-movement composition, written in 1820 and of the highest quality, was certainly intended to be part of a complete quartet but it failed to progress beyond the opening bars of the slow movement. Brahms’ Piano Quintet also had a complex evolution; on the advice of the violinist Joseph Joachim the original string quintet was rearranged for piano duet, and it only finally became a piano quintet at the suggestion of Clara Schumann. In the words of one contemporary, the quintet is 'beautiful beyond measure…a masterpiece of chamber music.'
