Music in the Round opens applications for the Bridge Summer Residential course
***DEADLINE EXTENDED - BRIDGE SCHEME APPLICATIONS NOW WELCOME UNTIL 2PM ON MONDAY 23 APRIL***
Music in the Round has opened applications for the Bridge Summer Residential course, to be held here in Sheffield 8-15 July 2018.
Bridge is our development scheme for young string players, and this new phase of the scheme is specifically designed to provide an opportunity for Black and Minority Ethnic musicians to 'take their place in chamber music' as we seek to tackle the significant underrepresentation of people of such backgrounds in classical music.
Bridge's Patron, Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE, says:
“As the founder of Chineke!, Europe's first majority-BME Orchestra which champions change and celebrates diversity in classical music, I am delighted to be part of Music in the Round’s plans to improve access to an industry which can often feel frustratingly immune to change. This chamber strings scheme, Bridge, is a heartening and worthwhile attempt to redress the longstanding imbalance in the opportunities open to people of different backgrounds, and I thoroughly commend it. Bridge represents an exciting new development for classical music, and I am proud that Music in the Round and Chineke! are working in partnership to bring it to fruition.”
Residential Course Leader Ruth Gibson, violist of our resident group Ensemble 360, says:
“As a member of Ensemble 360, I am delighted to be working with Music in the Round and Chineke! in the second phase of the Bridge scheme. The outrageous lack of diversity in the classical music world is something I believe we should all be keenly aware of and actively question and I’m excited to be setting up a course with like-minded colleagues. The chamber-music course aims to challenge practical and perceptual barriers which BME students face in the world of classical music by supporting their skills and building their confidence. The week-long course will be an exploration into the world of the string quartet with inspiring tutors from some of the best quartets and ensembles in Europe.”
Applications close at 2pm on 23 April 2018. ***PLEASE NOTE EXTENDED DEADLINE****
