Beethoven 250 with Music in the Round

As the world of classical music looks to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven in 2020, Music in the Round invites audiences around the country to join them at concerts and more.

At the heart of the Sheffield-based chamber music promoter’s celebrations, their very own Ensemble 360 will be performing a wide range of Beethoven’s chamber music, from duets and trios to pieces written specifically for six and eight wind players.

One of the star features of Ensemble 360’s celebrations will be a cycle of Beethoven’s complete String Quartets, which kicked off with a SOLD OUT performance at Sheffield’s Upper Chapel in November 2019. Concerts of Beethoven’s string quartets are also planned as part of Sheffield Chamber Music Festival (8 – 16 May 2020) and at Cast in Doncaster (Saturday 20 June 2020).

  • Music in the Round is staging its celebration of one of classical music’s best known composers from November 2019 – Spring 2021 in Sheffield and around the country.

  • Ensemble 360 presents Beethoven’s complete string quartets, which started with concerts with a SOLD OUT concert at Sheffield’s Upper Chapel (back in November) and continuing in Sheffield throughout 2020.

  • Ensemble 360 performs Beethoven's Harmoniemusik at Worley Hall on Thursday 19 March, as part of Penistone Arts Week.

  • A weekend of city-wide celebrations, including a concert with Ensemble 360 in Upper Chapel on Friday 20 March, and a Sheffield International Concert Season concert at the City Hall on Saturday 21 March starring Music in the Round Singer-in-Residence baritone Roderick Williams and The Hallé, with conductor Sir Mark Elder.

  • This will be followed by a Sunday morning performance of a selection of Beethoven’s Harmoniemusik for 6 and 8 wind players in the city’s fantastic new multi-arts venue Ko:Host, located above Kommune in Sheffield’s recently transformed iconic Castle House, Sunday 22 March.

  • The Sunday also includes a very special Come & Play event giving musicians of all abilities the chance to play  the first movement of Beethoven’s best-known work – his Fifth Symphony (all musical abilities welcome – from a rusty grade I to conservatoire trained!) alongside world-class performers from Ensemble 360 and Sheffield’s very own Hallam Sinfonia, Sunday 22 March.
  • Beethoven’s final three piano sonatas will also be performed in Sheffield by the acclaimed pianist Steven Osborne in one evening of sumptuous solo piano, Friday 27 March 2020
  • A wide-range of Beethoven’s chamber works will also be presented by Ensemble 360 with guests including pianist Paul Lewis at Sheffield Chamber Music Festival, 8 – 16 May 2020

The celebrations will continue around the country and through autumn 2020 with a performance of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto in Sheffield in a one-off collaboration between the Leonore Piano Trio (Benjamin Nabarro, Gemma Rosefield and Tim Horton) and Hallam Sinfonia. Music in the Round’s Beethoven 250 celebrations will conclude in the spring of 2021.

Benjamin Nabarro, violinist with Ensemble 360 said:

“String quartets have always played an important part of Music in the Round, beginning with the Lindsay String Quartet – and the vision of their remarkable lead violinist Peter Cropper who founded Music in the Round following a week-long festival of pure Beethoven quartets!

Undoubtedly one of the greatest and most important composers of all time, Beethoven wrote string quartets throughout most of his life, beginning with the Op.18’s in his late twenties, and ending with the monumental late quartets written in the last years of his life when he was deaf.

To undertake this cycle is to embark upon an extraordinary journey, not only into music of extraordinary depth and beauty, but also into the soul of Beethoven whose music speaks more directly and honestly from him than words can express.

We approach this cycle with excitement, anticipation and awe, and invite you to do the same.”
