Paul Rissmann is a composer, presenter and music educationalist working with orchestras and ensembles throughout the UK and abroad. He currently holds the position of Children’s Composer in Residence for Music in the Round and is Animateur for the London Symphony Orchestra.
In December 2012, Paul won a 10th Anniversary British Composer’s Award (BASCA) for his composition The Chimpanzees of Happytown. In 2013, he was made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM).
Paul’s commissions range from electronic music for Microsoft to orchestral music for the London Symphony Orchestra. His interactive composition Bamboozled for orchestra and audience has been performed by over 45,000 people - from Daytona Beach, Florida to Melbourne, Australia. In 2012 it was performed at an Olympic Torch relay in Leicester by the Philharmonia Orchestra and this year, it was performed by the New York Philharmonic at the Lincoln Centre.
Theatrical works include music for Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads, Alan Ayckbourn’s Comic Potential and a bespoke soundtrack to The Presents - a play for babies aged 6-18 months produced by Reeling and Writhing.
Paul has also composed ceremonial music for the opening of the Twin Sails Bridge in Poole Harbour, a Bicentennial anthem to the city of Bournemouth and music for the topping-out ceremony of the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.
Paul’s music has been performed by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Bruckner Symphony Orchestra Linz, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble 360, London Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia, New York Philharmonic, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and the Scottish Ensemble.
Paul’s music education projects have received awards from both the Royal Philharmonic Society and the Royal Television Society. He devises and presents orchestral concerts for many leading orchestras in Europe, America, Australia and the Middle East. Recent engagements include concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic in Abu Dhabi, Valery Gergiev and the LSO in Trafalgar Square, Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia at the Royal Festival Hall and presenting a Young Persons Concert with the New York Philharmonic in Avery Fisher Hall.
Back home in native Scotland, Paul guest presents for BBC Radio Scotland and also directs a critically acclaimed series of music discovery concerts for adults with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra called Naked Classics.
