Anthony (Tony) H Thornton MBE

We are saddened to hear the news that Tony Thornton passed away on Sunday 31 January in a London hospital. Tony was a very close friend of Peter Cropper and the Lindsay String Quartet, and together with David Brown, a fellow trustee of Sheffield Theatres, they planned and presented the very first Sheffield Chamber Music Festival in the Crucible Studio 1984. From these early beginnings grew Music in the Round, and Tony never stopped supporting us and our work - even enjoying our live-stream last December. He set up the Mayfield Valley Arts Trust to support music-making in Yorkshire, which continues to fund Music in the Round to this day. Our thoughts are with his family and especially his son, James.
