WeCompose: Composition in Secondary Schools

WeCompose is Music in the Round’s transformative in-schools composition project: a collaboration between teachers, professional composers, outstanding ensembles and leading music educators, which aims to change how composition is taught in secondary schools.

Participating ensembles have so far included the Ligeti String Quartet, Phaeda Ensemble, our own Bridge Ensemble wind quintet, the Bailey String Quartet (which features graduates of our previous Bridge scheme for string players from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds) and our visiting musicians the Consone Quartet.

Developing high quality resources and approaches, we work directly in South Yorkshire schools in Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, as well as schools in the East Riding of Yorkshire and Hull. As of 2024 we have expanded the project even further and now also work with schools in Central Bedfordshire, East London, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes and the Solent.
