WALLEN NNENNA (11′)
BEETHOVEN Septet (40′)
STRAVINSKY Septet (10′)
COLERIDGE-TAYLOR Nonet (26′)
Beethoven’s beloved Septet, one of his most expansive and accessible chamber works, is full of brilliant instrumental interplay, infectious melodies and unexpected turns.
For Ensemble 360, it is a signature work, perhaps their most frequently performed piece in more than twenty years of making music together. For the first time, they pair it with Errollyn Wallen’s NNENNA. Written for the same combination of wind and strings, this moving tribute unfolds in a single continuous movement, travelling from reflective melancholy to an arrangement of the lilting West African song Sweet Mother.
Stravinsky’s taut, thrillingly rhythmical Septet offers a sharply contrasting perspective on seven-player music. To close, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Nonet brings sweeping Romantic melodies, swagger and youthful confidence to an uplifting evening of chamber music on a grand scale.
