Bridge quartet 2014-2017
The very first winners of Music in the Round’s Bridge scheme to support a promising young string quartet. Bridge is a three-year bursary, worth £10,000 per year, with a range of other support, including a two-week residency with Aldeburgh Music. The scheme provides performance opportunities, mentoring, guidance and advice on developing and succeeding in the world of professional music-making. The quartet were also mentored by the late, world-renowned leader of The Lindsay String Quartet, Peter Cropper.
Founded in 2012 at the Royal College of Music, London, the Marmen Quartet consists of Johannes Marmen, Ricky Gore, Joshua Hayward and Anton Crayton. Having all previously collaborated extensively in other chamber music environments, their diverse experiences and love of chamber music, combined with a mutual interest in the full range of the classical repertoire, is a constant inspiration for the ensemble. All four players have played across the globe in venues including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Festival Hall and the Wigmore Hall.
Since its formation, the Marmen Quartet has enjoyed masterclasses with Shmuel Ashkenazi, Rainer Schmidt, Eberhard Feltz and Johannes Meissl, as well as regular coaching sessions with Simon Rowland-Jones and the late Peter Cropper. As the winners of Music In The Round’s professional development scheme – ‘Bridge’ – they will receive three years of mentoring, financial support, guidance in every aspect of life as a string quartet and regular performance opportunities.
Recent projects have included collaborations with Ensemble 360 and the Sacconi Quartet, a two week residency with Aldeburgh Music and the launch of a new house concert series; ‘Marmen at Home’. In July 2015 they formed the string section of the opera orchestra in Vattnäs Konsertlada, premiering Mats Larsson Gothe’s ‘Silverfågeln’, with artists including Anna Larsson.
The Marmen Quartet strongly believes in creative programming. They recently organized a chamber music series in Mora, Sweden, receiving critical acclaim for their recital of Mozart’s quartet in G major k.387 alongside transcriptions of Monteverdi madrigals together with flutist Taylor Maclennan. Their recent debut recital in Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre offered an eclectic and exciting combination of Haydn, renaissance composer Josquin Desprez, and Bela Bartok. 2016 will see recitals across the UK and a reprise of last season’s exhilarating performance of the Mendelssohn Octet together with the Sacconi Quartet.
