R SCHUMANN Faschingsschwank aus Wien Op.26 (21′)
RABINOVICH Shadow Ground (10′)
BEETHOVEN Sonata in C Op.53 ‘Waldstein’ (26′)
Praised for his “formidable technique” (★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Independent), pianist and composer Roman Rabinovich brings a spirit of invention to a programme spanning four centuries of keyboard music.
Bull’s Walsingham Variations transforms a simple Elizabethan song through thirty dazzling variations, revealing a wealth of possibilities in a single melody. In Schumann’s Faschingsschwank aus Wien, the bustle and mischief of a Viennese carnival give way to moments of tenderness and passionate introspection.
A painter, composer and pianist, Rabinovich, “a true polymath, in the Renaissance sense of the word” (Seen and Heard International), also performs his own Shadow Ground, bringing his voice into conversation with these richly contrasting works. Beethoven’s radiant Waldstein Sonata provides an exhilarating conclusion to an afternoon of stunning music for solo piano.
