BRITTEN Prologue from Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings (1’)
POULENC Oboe Sonata (15’)
BRITTEN Temporal Variations (14’)
POULENC Elégie for Horn & Piano (9’)

These works for oboe, horn and piano stage a conversation across the channel between two innovative voices of the twentieth century. Britten’s Serenade was written for the virtuoso horn player Dennis Brain, whose untimely death is the tragic subject of Poulenc’s Elégie, a majestically soulful piece. Britten’s Temporal Variations brilliantly show off the range and colour of the oboe, and contrast with the languid opening of Poulenc’s Oboe Sonata, which sets the tone for his last great work: a meditation on mortality and music.

Recorded in Emmanuel Church, Barnsley.
