A chance to hear music by composers who have too often been absent from the standard chamber repertoire, performed by some of Britain’s finest chamber musicians.
Celebrating composers whose orchestral work featured in the groundbreaking Black Composers music series by recording label CBS, here we explore their lesser-known chamber works, many of which receive their UK premieres.
From Ulysses Kay’s concise Prelude for Solo Flute to Roque Cordero’s intricate Variations and Theme for Five, we move through music for solo instruments, a piano trio, wind quintet and strings.
Adolphus Hailstork’s Divertimento and George Walker’s piano trio reveal contrasting approaches to colour and rhythm, while David Baker’s Sonata for Cello and Piano brings jazz-inflected musical language into the classical sonata tradition.
The programme closes with music by celebrated violinist and composer Joseph Bologne, offering a glimpse into the music of Enlightenment Paris.
