WATKINS Oboe Quartet (15′)
MENDELSSOHN Octet (33′)
At the heart of this concert are two extraordinary masterpieces of the Romantic chamber repertoire: Schubert’s haunting Death and the Maiden and Mendelssohn’s exuberant Octet.
Schubert’s Death & the Maiden is one of his most powerful and compelling works, its dramatic intensity and restless energy set against moments of profound tenderness. In striking contrast, Mendelssohn’s Octet is a dazzling feat of youthful genius, transforming the sound of eight string players into an orchestral world of exhilarating virtuosity, lyrical beauty and irrepressible vitality.
The programme also celebrates two of Britain’s leading living composers. Errollyn Wallen’s Everything is Curved receives its UK premiere, bringing together chorale-like writing, dance rhythms and flashes of virtuosic energy. Huw Watkins’s Oboe Quartet offers a richly coloured and lyrical counterpoint, with a beautifully expressive slow movement framed by two vivid outer movements.
