He studied guitar from the age of seven and percussion from the age of thirteen. In 2004, he became the youngest instrumentalist to receive a Fellowship Award from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. One of the UK’s most recorded guitarists, he has accumulated an acclaimed discography for Chandos, Virgin/EMI, Nimbus, Hyperion, Sony and six chart-topping albums for Classic FM. His most recent recordings are a solo recital disc for Chandos, Craig Ogden in Concert and a new arrangement of the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach with violinist David Juritz and cellist Tim Hugh for Nimbus Records.

Best-selling children’s book, Izzy Gizmo by Pip Jones, illustrated by Sara Ogilvie, tells the enchanting story of an intrepid young inventor who puts her talents to work to rescue a crow that can’t fly. This brand-new family concert brings Izzy’s mechanical marvels and infectious creative spirit to life! Original music by Paul Rissmann features pots, pans, whistles and household items (as well as orchestral instruments). Together with story-telling and visuals from the book, this concert is a great introduction to live music for children. Ensemble 360 musicians

Ensemble 360

Ensemble 360 has gained an enviable reputation across the UK for the quality and integrity of their performances. Formed in 2005, eleven musicians of international standing came together to take up residency in South Yorkshire with Music in the Round, establishing a versatile group comprising five string players, five wind players and a pianist.  Get a glimpse of them in performance here.

The Ensemble 360 musicians share a passion for the music which radiates through each performance. Their enthusiasm, drive and musicality captivate audiences both through the quality of their playing and their engaging spoken introductions. Tony had wide ranging musical tastes. He always said that it was Peter Cropper, the visionary leader of the Lindsay String Quartet, who introduced him to the joys of chamber music in the early 1970s.

This evening’s programme features three composers who were perhaps most important for Tony: Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven. 

Schubert song recitals were always a highlight for Tony, especially at the Wigmore Hall, as were also Mozart’s operas, which brought him so much pleasure on his annual visits to Glyndebourne.

I know he would be delighted at the prospect of Sarah Fox and Tim performing for us tonight. Beethoven’s String Quartet Op.132 was perhaps the piece that meant most to Tony, especially the great Molto adagio movement, which is one of the supreme moments in all music, a work of great contemplation and intensity. The clue may lie in its heading ‘Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen’ (‘Holy song of thanksgiving’). The beautiful Mayfield Valley was a favourite spot for Tony to walk and cycle and he commissioned Tim Rose to paint this landscape with The Lindsays playing the Op.132 hidden in the clouds.

It is to Delma Tomlin we owe Tony’s interest in early music and the National Centre for Early Music. It is therefore fitting for this evening’s concert to open with a welcome from The Gesualdo Six singing a selection of madrigals from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The music of Hungary is passionate, thrilling and rooted in the country’s own folk music traditions, perhaps best heard in the works of Béla Bartók and György Ligeti, two of the 20th century’s most important composers. Bartók’s First Violin Sonata is a storm of energy interspersed with moments of elegance and beauty; while Ligeti’s Horn Trio is a modern classic that echoes the Brahms Horn Trio with its emotion, as well as featuring dramatic effects from the horn.

About the Artists

Tim Horton

Tim Horton is one of the UK’s leading pianists, equally at home in solo and chamber repertoire. He is a founder member of both the Leonore Piano Trio and Ensemble 360 and has been a regular guest pianist with the Nash Ensemble. He was invited to make his solo debut at Wigmore Hall in 2016 where he will be giving further solo recitals in the coming seasons. Between 2011 and 2015 Tim presented a complete Beethoven Sonata cycle at the Crucible Studio, Sheffield for Music in the Round, and was invited to return to perform a cycle of Schubert Sonatas from 2017-2019.

Tim has performed with many leading chamber musicians including the Elias, Vertavo and Talich Quartets, Paul Lewis, Imogen Cooper, Alasdair Beatson, Bjorg Lewis, Robin Ireland (with whom he has released two discs), Peter Cropper, Adrian Brendel and Rachel Roberts.

Music in the Round’s Singer-in-Residence, Roderick Williams, is without a doubt one of the greatest performers of English song. In this concert, Roderick and Christopher will carry us through the wonderful Wessex world of Thomas Hardy’s poems set to music. From cider-drenched outbursts of joy in spring, to the falling yellow leaves of autumn, expect to be completely absorbed by an idyllic landscape with these outstanding musicians.  

Roderick and Christopher will also be joined by special guest Momentum artist, Gareth Brynmor John, who will be performing a few songs in this concert. The ‘Momentum: Our Future, Now’ initiative has been established in response to the pandemic, which sees leading soloists and conductors supporting younger colleagues by inviting them to share the stage at concerts and events taking place over the coming seasons.

Gareth first wowed Sheffield audiences back in December 2017, when he stood in for Roderick Williams who was unable to perform due to illness. Music in the Round is absolutely delighted to be welcoming them both back to Upper Chapel this autumn, as we do all that we can to support musicians in these challenging times.

About the Artists

Roderick Williams

Roderick Williams is one of this country’s most sought after baritones and is constantly in demand on the concert platform and in recital, encompassing a repertoire from the baroque to world premieres.   In 2016 he won the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Singer of the year award.

He is also a composer and has had works premiered at the Wigmore and Barbican Halls, the Purcell Room and live on national radio. Recent commissions include a major  work, World without End, for the Rias Kammerchor and BBC Singers as well as a commission to celebrate the centenary of the RAF.   He was Artistic Director of Leeds Lieder + in April 2016 and he is currently ‘singer-in-residence’ for Music in the Round in Sheffield, presenting concerts and leading on dynamic and innovative learning and participation projects that introduce amateur singers, young and old, to performing classical song repertoire.  He was awarded an OBE for services to music in June 2017.

Christopher Glynn

Chris is an award-winning pianist and accompanist, praised for his ‘breathtaking sensitivity’ (Gramophone), ‘irrepressible energy, wit and finesse’ (The Guardian), ‘a perfect fusion of voice and piano’ (BBC Music Magazine) and as ‘an inspired programmer’ (The Times). He is also Artistic Director of the Ryedale Festival, programming around sixty events each year in beautiful and historic venues across North Yorkshire.

Chris read music at New College, Oxford and studied piano with John Streets in France and Malcolm Martineau at the Royal Academy of Music, where he now teaches. He has made many CD recordings and is regularly heard on BBC Radio 3.

An interest in bringing classical song to a wider audience recently led Chris to commission Jeremy Sams to create new English translations of Schubert’s song cycles, now being recorded for Signum Records. Future plans include recitals with Roderick Williams and Ian Bostridge, further collaborations with Jeremy Sams (Schumann and Wolf songs), CD recordings with Nicky Spence, Kathryn Rudge, Claire Booth, Roderick Williams and The Sixteen, a project with Streetwise Opera, leading masterclasses for the Britten Pears School, a tour of Wolf’s Italian Songbook, and embarking on a project with Rachel Podger to perform and record Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas.

Three centuries of music feature in this much-anticipated return to the Crucible Studio, with a 19th century classic, a large-scale gem of the 20th century chamber repertoire and a world premiere composed in 2021. Nine members of Ensemble 360 open this concert with Martinů’s tuneful and optimistic, richly textured Nonet. We are delighted to present the latest in our series of RPS chamber music commissions: a new work for piano trio by Rūta Vitkauskaitė. We conclude with Dvořák’s lyrical and lively folk dance-inspired masterpiece.

About the Artists

Leonore Piano Trio

Formed in 2012, the Leonore Trio brings together three internationally acclaimed artists whose piano trio performances as part of Ensemble 360 were met with such enthusiastic responses that they decided to form a piano trio in its own right.

The Trio has since given concerts throughout the UK, Italy, Norway (Bergen International Festival and Oslo Concert Hall), Denmark and in New Zealand.

Recent highlights include a performance of the complete Beethoven Piano Trios at Kings Place, and an even broader long-term project, including all the works by Beethoven for piano trio, piano and violin, and piano and cello for Music in the Round in Sheffield. The Trio also returned to Istanbul’s Süreyya Opera House, Wigmore Hall, the Sage Gateshead, Bath Mozartfest, Durham MUSICON series, Eaton Square Concerts and a tour of Scotland. Their latest disc for Hyperion, of works by Henry Charles Litolff, was released in February 2020.
