The Goldberg Variations are rightly hugely popular. First written for harpsichord and best known to modern audiences as a work for piano, here they are arranged for string trio. In this form, the intricacy of counterpoint and the spirituality of this monumental musical structure are brought to the fore through the conversational interplay between the instruments. These hour-long concerts are not to be missed.

Marking clarinettist Matthew Hunt’s final appearance in Sheffield as a member of Ensemble 360, he appears in three pieces for this concert.  Adès’s Catch is a series of intricate musical games and explosive new sounds for strings, clarinet and piano. Stravinsky’s narrative work, A Soldier’s Tale, features an enjoyable mix of styles including ragtime and klezmer to create a dramatic and melodic miniature epic. To end, one of Brahms’s later works, his Clarinet Trio providing a fitting conclusion to this fantastic concert.

Mishka Rushdie Momen was The Times Arts critics’ chosen nominee in the field of classical music for their 2021 Breakthrough Award. This award is given by Sky Arts and The South Bank Show who profiled her for an episode of the programme to be broadcast in July. She appears in recitals and concerto performances worldwide, and Sir András Schiff has presented her in recitals in Zurich Tonhalle, 92Y in New York City, deSingel, Antwerp, and other venues across Europe.

Tim Horton continues his exploration of Chopin’s central place within the history of the piano. Looking back, Mozart’s improvisational Fantasy in C minor is dramatic in quality and dark in tone. Looking forward, Szymanowski’s dream-like Masques is colourful, hypnotic and capricious. Taking centre stage, Chopin’s innovative four Ballades share noble melodies and dance-like quality to explore the varied colours of the piano.

Tim Horton

Tim Horton is one of the UK’s leading pianists, equally at home in solo and chamber repertoire. He is a founder member of both the Leonore Piano Trio and Ensemble 360 and has been a regular guest pianist with the Nash Ensemble.

Between 2011 and 2015 Tim presented a complete Beethoven Sonata cycle at the Crucible Studio, Sheffield for Music in the Round, and was invited to return to perform a cycle of Schubert Sonatas from 2017-2019.

Best-selling children’s book, Izzy Gizmo by Pip Jones, illustrated by Sara Ogilvie, tells the enchanting story of an intrepid young inventor who puts her talents to work to rescue a crow that can’t fly. This brand-new concert for 3 to 7 year-olds brings Izzy’s mechanical marvels and infectious creative spirit to life! Original music by Paul Rissmann features pots, pans, whistles and household items (as well as orchestral instruments). Together with story-telling and visuals from the book, this concert is a great introduction to live music for children. It’s full of wit, invention, songs and actions, and plenty of opportunities to join in.

Ensemble 360 has gained an enviable reputation across the UK for the quality and integrity of their performances. Formed in 2005, eleven musicians of international standing came together to take up residency in South Yorkshire with Music in the Round, establishing a versatile group comprising five string players, five wind players and a pianist.  Get a glimpse of them in performance here.

He studied guitar from the age of seven and percussion from the age of thirteen. In 2004, he became the youngest instrumentalist to receive a Fellowship Award from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. One of the UK’s most recorded guitarists, he has accumulated an acclaimed discography for Chandos, Virgin/EMI, Nimbus, Hyperion, Sony and six chart-topping albums for Classic FM. His most recent recordings are a solo recital disc for Chandos, Craig Ogden in Concert and a new arrangement of the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach with violinist David Juritz and cellist Tim Hugh for Nimbus Records.

Tony had wide ranging musical tastes. He always said that it was Peter Cropper, the visionary leader of the Lindsay String Quartet, who introduced him to the joys of chamber music in the early 1970s.

This evening’s programme features three composers who were perhaps most important for Tony: Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven. 

Schubert song recitals were always a highlight for Tony, especially at the Wigmore Hall, as were also Mozart’s operas, which brought him so much pleasure on his annual visits to Glyndebourne.

I know he would be delighted at the prospect of Sarah Fox and Tim performing for us tonight. Beethoven’s String Quartet Op.132 was perhaps the piece that meant most to Tony, especially the great Molto adagio movement, which is one of the supreme moments in all music, a work of great contemplation and intensity. The clue may lie in its heading ‘Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen’ (‘Holy song of thanksgiving’). The beautiful Mayfield Valley was a favourite spot for Tony to walk and cycle and he commissioned Tim Rose to paint this landscape with The Lindsays playing the Op.132 hidden in the clouds.

It is to Delma Tomlin we owe Tony’s interest in early music and the National Centre for Early Music. It is therefore fitting for this evening’s concert to open with a welcome from The Gesualdo Six singing a selection of madrigals from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The music of Hungary is passionate, thrilling and rooted in the country’s own folk music traditions, perhaps best heard in the works of Béla Bartók and György Ligeti, two of the 20th century’s most important composers. Bartók’s First Violin Sonata is a storm of energy interspersed with moments of elegance and beauty; while Ligeti’s Horn Trio is a modern classic that echoes the Brahms Horn Trio with its emotion, as well as featuring dramatic effects from the horn.

Tim Horton

Tim Horton is one of the UK’s leading pianists, equally at home in solo and chamber repertoire. He is a founder member of both the Leonore Piano Trio and Ensemble 360 and has been a regular guest pianist with the Nash Ensemble. Tim has performed with many leading chamber musicians including the Elias, Vertavo and Talich Quartets, Paul Lewis, Imogen Cooper, Alasdair Beatson, Bjorg Lewis, Robin Ireland (with whom he has released two discs), Peter Cropper, Adrian Brendel and Rachel Roberts.
